What do we gain by reading a detailed description about the building of the Mishkan, a structure which no longer exists? In fact, we can learn a number of important life lessons and principles from the building of the Mishkan, such as a life of Terumah, a life of giving.
The transition from Senior Kindergarten to Grade 1 is the first big jump in a child’s educational journey and a magical year of exploration and discovery. At Associated, our teachers recognize that there is a big shift in the daily structure for students when they start Grade 1 and are dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition from Bet Hayeled to Kitah Aleph.
Although there is not much spring to look at outside, in Israel, the month of Shvat brings visible signs of renewal and growth in nature, reminding us of the many parallels between the life cycles of the trees and other plants, and our own lives, especially in the field of education. As we gear up for Tu B’Shvat, regardless of the snow outside, we are becoming excited for a holiday that is all about planting.
As we recount the miracles that transpired on Chanukah, we say the words bayamim hahem ba’zman hazeh, In those days in our times. We commemorate the miracles of those days, while we are prompted to become conscious of our own miracles today. At AHS, we are “aflame” with a communal sense of gratitude for all the joys and wonders that unfold here each day, and for the myriad gifts that our students bring to our school community.
The Jewish “holiday season” is behind us now, yet we have one holiday which we celebrate every week: Shabbat. There is no other mitzvah that reminds us regularly how much we need it like Shabbat does. On this day we disconnect to connect. It does not allow us to answer – or even read – our emails; Shabbat gives us permission to take a break from the things that stress us out and tune into our inner worlds.

In 1947, Naomi Shemer, an Israeli songwriter, published the song ” Shlomit Bonah Sukkah.” The song conveys a longing for peace. In the song, Shlomit builds a Sukkah in which people make peace with one another, respect one another, and in which, through thoughtfulness, they arrive at love and unity, peace and friendship.
As we prepare to usher in the Jewish New Year, we are presented with an opportunity for reflection on the year that has passed and on our goals for the year ahead. We want to make this coming year – the 2019-20 school year, and the Jewish year of 5780 – the best that it can possibly be, and to make the most of our year’s theme of Tradition and Innovation.
