As we recount the miracles that transpired on Chanukah, we say the words bayamim hahem ba’zman hazeh, In those days in our times. We commemorate the miracles of those days, while we are prompted to become conscious of our own miracles today. At AHS, we are “aflame” with a communal sense of gratitude for all the joys and wonders that unfold here each day, and for the myriad gifts that our students bring to our school community.
The phrase bayamim hahem ba’zman hazeh links an age-old story to our 21st century reality. It’s a call to renew the sentiments and teachings of yesteryear and create relevance today. Chanukah means “dedication” or “rededication.” It’s a time to rededicate ourselves to living more meaningfully. Our dedicated staff constantly reflects on ways to apply traditional values such as commitment, faith, and perseverance, as we innovate and advance our educational practices.
We have a custom of “Chanukat habayit,” dedication of the house, when we move to a new house. How do we incorporate a “chanukat bayit,” a sense of dedication and renewal even when we stay in the same place where we already live? AHS teachers consistently strive to give students a sense of freshness and vitality, even as they remain in the same physical space. Yet, fundamentally, our students never stay in the same place for long; they are always moving into new learning territory, growing new mindsets, developing new skills, reaching new goals.
May the spirit of this holiday inspire us to connect to our tradition and see our lives in a freshly rekindled light. And wherever you are this Chanukah, may you bring light to your surroundings, just as our families regularly light up our halls and our community when school is in session.
Shabbat Shalom and Chanukah Sameach!
