Student Voices: Yehonatan
This blog post is written by past AHS Posluns student Yehonatan Fuks. He now lives in Israel and is documenting his life there in a series of blog posts for Associated.
Part One
Hello everybody!
My name is Yehonatan. I am 14 years old and I live in Netanya, Israel. Netanya is located near the sea, and actually I can see the beach from my house balcony. I am a student at “Hakfar Hayarok” school which is near the city of Tel Aviv. Due to the Covid-19 situation I am learning from my house by using the zoom app.
I have one younger sister. My dad is a heart surgeon and my mom is a lawyer. Six years ago my family moved to Toronto for a year and a half and during that time my dad worked as a heart surgeon at Toronto General Hospital. I was a student at AHS Posluns and this time was very special to me and I really enjoyed learning at Associated. I have a lot of nice memories.
This week is very special here in Israel, Today (ד׳ באייר) is Yom Hazikaron. Like every year at 8pm there is a moment of silence. This minute is very heart touching and it reminds us all of the heroes that died for the independence of Israel. Click here to watch a video from a past Independence Day ceremony. In the video you can see the IDF soldiers march, which is the main part of the entire day.
Tomorrow we will celebrate Israel’s 72nd Independence Day (ה׳ באייר). Like every year, we will decorate our balcony with many Israel’s flags. Every year there is a big ceremony in הר הרצל (Herzel Mountain) which is in Jerusalem. Every year at the ceremony, 12 torches are lit by chosen people. Afterward, the speaker of the Knneset (Israel’s parliament) has a speech. At the end of the ceremony soldiers from the IDF march. After the ceremony the skies of Israel are illuminated by dozens of fireworks.
This year there won’t be fireworks because that the government didn’t want that many people to go outside to see the fireworks shows and gather together. Also, every year there is an impressive air show that passes just over the seashore. This year’s air show will be dedicated to all of the doctors and staff that are helping Israel to fight the coronavirus. This year the airplanes will fly over all of the hospitals in Israel.
I want to share with you the conflict about moving from Yom Hazikaron sadness to Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations. We always must remember that without these heroes sacrifice, we wouldn’t have our independent country.
That’s it for my first part of my blog. I wish you all a lot of health and hopefully soon we will pass this crisis.
I’m so happy that I got the opportunity from Mrs. Shulman to write this blog and also I’d like to thank Ms. Jillian Cramer that helped me to post this blog.
Yours,
Yehonatan Fuks.
